Cash Back Credit Card Bonuses Shrink In May but $150 Cash Back Bonuses Available

While the credit card market is replete with offers for travel rewards, many cardholders still prefer the value, convenience, and simplicity of cash back rewards. Nevertheless, April saw the expiration of a pair of limited time, cash back sign up bonus offers. Both the Freedom card from Chase and the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Visa Card saw their sign up bonuses decrease from $200 to $100.  The fact that both of these major card issuers are cutting their cash back sign up bonuses in half on their leading products can only point towards lower sign up bonuses across the board.

Yet beyond the initial sign up bonus, the Citi card still has a lot to offer. For example, there is no quarterly limit on 5% cash back earnings within bonus categories of spending, unlike the Chase Freedom and the Discover More cards. For instance, Citi Dividend cardholders could spend $2,000 at a home improvement store this quarter and earn $100 cash back.

January 2012?s Best 0% Balance Transfer Credit Card Offers

January typically marks the beginning of balance transfer season for consumers and 2012 looks to be getting off to a good start. Consumers who anticipate needing a significant amount of time to repay their credit cards will find it possible to get a 0% APR balance transfer lasting 21 months, while those who are confident they can repay balances sooner can get a 0% APR for 12 months and pay no balance transfer fees.

Given the availability of both long term 0% APR offers with low 3% fees and shorter term no fee balance transfer cards, selecting the best balance transfer card really comes down to individual needs. Consumers who want to save on upfront fees ($30 for every $1,000 transferred) and are comfortable with only a 12 month 0% balance transfer period are likely best off with the recently released, limited time no fee balance transfer offer from Discover. This card is ideal for consumers who simply need a few months to get caught up on outstanding bills. Y

Checklist for heart failure patients can reduce readmissions

CHICAGO – According to research presented last week at the American College of Cardiology’s 61st Annual Scientific Session, the likelihood of heart failure patient readmission can be drastically lowered when using a simple checklist before patients leave the hospital.

The inexpensive checklist, which can also improve the quality of care patients receive, was developed by Abhijeet Basoor at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Mich., where he practices Internal Medicine and Cardiology.

Clinicians who used this one-page, 27-question checklist at discharge were able to cut the percentage of patients who were readmitted to the hospital within one month of a cardiac event from 20 percent to just 2 percent. The readmission rate continued to be lower six months after discharge. If broadly adopted, it could translate into billions of Medicare dollars saved each year. While other studies have shown that home care and patient education can reduce readmissions, this is the first to evaluate the use of such a unique one-page, in-hospital checklist that requires no extra cost.

The Best Cash Back Credit Cards for Groceries

For many Americans, spending at grocery stores represents the highest share of their essential purchases. To maximize purchasing power, shoppers aggressively search for the best prices and use coupons wherever possible. Another great way to save money at supermarkets is to use a credit card that offers rewards for spending at grocery stores.

One card that helps consumers earn valuable travel rewards at the grocery store and on other purchases is the Venture Rewards card from Capital One. Cardholders earn two miles in Capital One’s program for each purchase. When it comes time to redeem those miles, each mile is worth one cent as a statement credit towards any travel related expense such as airfare, hotels, and car rentals. This card has a $59 annual fee that is waived the first year. A popular, no-fee alternative is the VentureOne card which has no annual fee but only returns 1.25 miles per dollar.

While the Capital One Venture cards offer the same rewards for all spending, some cards offer increased rewards for purchases from supermarkets and grocery stores. T

Negotiating a Lower Interest Rate on Your Credit Cards

One of the most depressing things about credit cards is the interest rates that you are charged. The interest rate you pay can make it harder to pay down debt and obtain financial freedom. If you are looking for a bit of a break, you can call your credit card companies and negotiate a lower interest rate. This will help you put more of your payment each month toward the principal, helping you achieve financial freedom.

When you call to ask for a lower interest rate, it can help you have you have been a good customer. If you have made your payments on time, you are more likely to get help with a lower interest rate on your credit card. A good credit score is likely to help you as well. You might also get help with a lower interest rate if you explain that you are having trouble making payments, and that you plan to pay your obligation.

AAFP stays in the RUC

LEAWOOD, KS – The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has decided to continue its participation with a committee that helps to determine how much the government pays doctors despite that committee’s rejection of most of AAFP’s demands.

Last summer, the AAFP sent a letter to the American Medical Association/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee, known as the RUC, with five demands that the AAFP believed would provide greater equity for primary care services by altering the committee’s structure, processes and procedures.

The AAFP asked the RUC to respond to its letter by March 1 of this year. The RUC has responded, announced the AAFP yesterday. Most of its demands were rejected.

“We’re disappointed and frustrated that their response did not in some ways substantially meet our request,” said Glen Stream, MD, AAFP president. “Our decision
